As we prepare for the new ‘Jungle Warfare’ exhibition, it is nice to think about instruments of surrender. The Cheshire Military Museum is home to two of the pens used to sign what is arguably the most significant surrender in modern history. More information about the event is here.

US General Douglas MacArthur chose multiple pens to acknowledge the Allied representatives present, and their historic importance. Of the six used, four were Waterman fountain pens, and at least one was a Sheaffer. The men standing just behind MacArthur each received a pen, as a mark of honour. One of the Waterman pens is displayed at the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, two other pens are in the Cheshire Military Museum in the UK.

Come and see the pens at the museum and share a little comfort in the ending of a war.
